Weekend Update

  • Rob Harrington of the online edition of the multi-color fishwrap wonders who will take over the class of 2008?.
  • He also posts his initial class rankings of 2008
  • CNNSI.com talks about Greg Monroe being a force. And who will be the lucky team and coach to sign him for at least one year?
  • Good news for the CAA according to the Hodge Report of CSTV as UNC Wilmington boldy goes (bald) and gets a 2008 forward.
  • Yes, all the silly puns are intended, although not necessarily funny. If they were, I would be on Comedy Central :)
  • Goodman blogs about Florida;s new center. Dick Hoops Weiss chimes in as well.
  • Goodman also talks about Billy Gillespie's recruiting efforts at Kentucky. Also at FireBilly
  • Kentucky recruiting thoughts at A Sea of Blue
  • Marshall picks up some of the Zags magic as they get P-Mac as a transfer. P-Mac is short for Pierre Marie Altidor Cespedes (I did not cut/paste folks, I typed it all in!). P-Mac was grandfathered in the now doomed (and deemed free agency rule) that was rescinded. But he petitioned and he was grandfathered in so he will be eligible to play in 2007-2008, his final year of eligibility. New head coach Donnie Jones (former Florida assistant) is stockpiling talent and hopes to take advantages of the vacuum of power at the top of Conference USA behind the Calipari Experiment and the loaded UAB squad.
  • The George Mason blog says that Coach L is pursuing four players from the DC Assault AAU team, three in 2009 and one in 2010.
  • The Indiana Hoosiers are considering a new arena. The Kelvin Sampson effect?
  • Minnessota recruiting news at Paging Jim Shikenjanski

  • Randy Hill takes a critical look at the youth movement at Fox Sports. This was inspired by the recent commitment of Ryan Boatwright to Tim Floyd's USC Trojans... Randy mentions that top 100s of zygotes. I already did that and i'm working on a pre-embryonic top 100, but I have a lot of tape to go through first! :-)

Happy Birthday Pistol Pete (would have turned 60 today)!

Thanks to author Wayne Federman for the reminder: Pistol Pete Maravich would have turned 60 today, Friday June 22, 2007. Wayne wrote the book "Maravich". Official website of his book at MaravichBook.com.

More on Pistol Pete: A great mix of Pistol Pete highlights on YouTube.com. Wayne has also been interviewed by NPR. And the one and only Bill Walton talks about Maravich. For those in or near Los Angeles, the author Wayne Federman will be having a book signing, discussion and Q&A on Tuesday June 26, at 730pm (pacific time) at the Barnes and Noble at the Grove.

    Transferology

  • Thanks to Hoops Boston for a link to my previous post on basketball prodigy (?) J-Mychal Reese. Hoops Boston covers all things hoops in Boston. They also have an interesting poll, asking which member of the 1986 Boston Celtics is the best NBA executive so far. Very familiar names are in the list, such as Larry Bird, Danny Ainge, Robert Parish, Dennis "microwave" Johnson, Bill Walton, Kevin McHale. But the top voter is not one of those. Read on to find out who...
  • The latest updates at CSTV's Hodge Report inform us that a D1 players transfers from one Texas school to another. However, more than a dozen additional D1 transfers have been announced. The most high profile is probably Jonathan "I thought I was the next Kevin Garnett" Huffman of PitinoVille... On the pledge front, Heath-less Arkansas gets a new guard, while USC added another player for next season who was in 2008 beforehand. As you may recall USC did that last year when they accelerated the graduation of Daniel Hackett who was supposed to come in in 2007-2008, but instead joined the team in 2006-2007 after it lost Ryan Francis to a tragic death and Gabe Pruitt to academic ineligibility.
  • Arizona scored another big man says Jeff Goodman. Big man Kirk Walters has been given a medical redshirt and will return for 2007-2008
  • FoxSports looks at Tim Floyd offering scholarships to eighth graders. Story by
  • A Sea of Blue has an update on the Supreme Court looking at recruiting middle-school football players by the Brentwood Academy.
  • Jeff Goodman says that summer camps are really going to stress skill development. He also posts a schedule of the key July events, including the Nike Peach Jam, RBK: U, adidas Super 64, and the Nike Main Event.
  • Speaking of summer camp schedules, here are select Nike summer events
  • Tomorrow I will be revealing my pre-embryonic Top 10 ranking of college basketball recruits. Regular readers of this blog may recall that I managed to post the first ranking of embryos, beating all the industry giants to this, well ahead of Hoop Scoop, Rivals, Scout, ESPN, CSTV, Fans Only, Hoopmasters, Tom Konchalski, etc :-)
  • Dick "Hoops" Weiss looks at the impact of last year's NBA draft early entry rule to college basketball.
  • HoopsFuture.com posted their top five players of the Nike Hoops Jamboree. Included is 7-footer (7'2") John Riek from the Sudan
  • More updates on the Scouts front page. Subscription is required for a number of their stories, but not all of them.
  • Gary Parrish reports that Memphis big man Kareem Cooper is visiting UTEP. What's the link? The UTEP head coach Tony Barbee was an assistant at Memphis the last few years. Cooper was part of the Laurenberg Institute dream team that committed together to Calipari's Experiment.

    Embryonic Recruiting

  • The battle for signing the nation's top embryos is raging among college basketball coaches. The pre-embryonic signing period ends tonight ;-)
  • Why the above? Well we are not far off. USC has picked up an eighth grader according to Fox Sports. Tim Floyd has picked up 5-10 rising freshman (2011 class) Ryan Boatwright. Tim Floyd also picked up Dwayne Polee Jr last year of a similar class standing.
  • Clark Francis has a new post in the Visitors section of his website (very long page full of text with tiny fonts), talking about his Top 750 players in the class of 2008. Not a typo, not top 75, but top 750. Seven hundred and fifty... Last week's post looks at the top players in the state of Texas, a very fertile ground in the world of basketball (and football) recruiting.
  • Dick Hoops Weiss has a quick update on NBA's Elite 100 and USA Basketball's 19-and-under Festival in Colorado.
  • Dick Hoops Weiss also reports that Pitino is currently the leader for touted and coveted 2008 Tyreke Evans. Dick has updates from the AAU circuit as well, including a Clark Francis reference.
  • The Hodge Report at CSTV has new updates, new players for Kansas and Bill Self, Mississippi State, Xavier, Miami of Florida, Tulane (2), and a number of Texan schools. Also a Texan point guard wants to become the next Jared Jordan as he transfers to Marist. Marist is now mid-major point guard U! Meanwhile Texas A&M lost a 2008 player that decided on A&M just this Monday... Meanwhile Billy Clyde Glide Gillispie picks up a 2010 forward (rising sophomore).
  • Some of the top uncommitted players of 2008 and 2009 are also Kentucky targets according to A Sea of Blue
  • Sad news for Texan forward Gary Johnson, a medical condition detected during a routine physical at UT-Austin will keep him out of action at least for this year according to Goodman's blog
  • College Hoops on TV? I kid you not. Of course the games are repeats, and most of the documentaries are repeats, but if you are a hoops fan-addict (not to be confused with fan-anatic), then take a look at the massive tv schedule for the next few days. Extensive TV NBA Draft coverage is included as a bonus :-) Also check the tv schedule for recruiting-related programming such as repeats of state high school championship finals. Some of the players featured include UCLA-bound Kevin Love, and Kentucky-bound AJ Stewart, although Stewart was in foul-trouble in the Florida 2A final.

Top 99 Class of 2008 in the Sporting News Magazine!

The June 18 (6/18/2007) edition of the weekly TSN (The Sporting News) features the Top 99 high school players in the class of 2008. The story is by Mike DeCourcy (or is it De Courcy?). Half of their top ten players ranked are uncommitted (two of them committed after the story was printed). The story is on page 12 (four full pages long). Greg Monroe is emerging as a #1 (size matters), while the last spot (#99) goes to Stanford-bound wing Jarrett Mann (no relation to Juwanna Mann?)... Who is not included? Once upon a time considered a very promising forward, Malik Story has cooled off significantly... This issue features Keith Olbermann on the cover.

Here is a misleading hint: Some people love mayo ;-) While some rankers give Top 50 or Top 100 or even Top 150, Van Coleman went all the way with a Top 250! Well done! And who is #250 you think? Why who else? Michael Jordan's son!

  • The Hodge Report at CSTV has new news: Rick Pitino gets a top 100 forward out of Jersey (2008 class), Majerus gets another commit, Colorado State has signed a player who has changed college choices twice already before even setting foot on a campus, Ohio State and Valpo lose a commit, but Nevada gains a local one.

  • Goodman also talks about Nevada beating the Thad Matta Express for the services of a local but touted prospect.
  • On the anniversary of the "Tear down this Wall" speech, Rivals.com has decided to enact their own perestroika by making more of their content available to the masses. This latest story by Justin Young looks at mid-major recruiting. Although some mid-major fans will argue that neither Memphis nor Gonzaga are really mid-majors. Gonzaga is a designer mid-major, while Memphis is a "BCS" team trapped in a mid-major conference while undergoing the Calipari Experiment.

  • According to the latest Hodge REport at CSTV, a player transfers out of Colorado, while Montana and Eastern Kentucky gain a transfer, and Manhattan gets a new prospect.
  • A Sea of Blue has a write-up on Josh Partner talking with Billy Clyde Gillispie. Pastner would add even more Texas recruiting connections to Kentucky. But this is also interesting to follow from the Kevin O'Neill perspective. O'Neill is not exactly the most easy going person according to multiple on-the-record insiders, and his hiring may be what is causing Pastner to look elsewhere.

  • Huggin's legacy of recruiting transfers continued at Kansas State without him
  • Butler continues to pick up 2008 commits. The success of last season helped a lot, Alford-less Iowa gets a 2008 guard. and one recruit goes from the cold Canadian weather to a tropical paradise. No Riley Wallace though.

    Friday commits

  • The tireless people at the Hodge Report on CSTV continue to report the latest in commitments and such, free of charge. Visit their website for all the details... Florida State clears the water using the force (double pun!), a Stan Heath playertransfers to mid-major-land, a CAA team gets James (not LeBron), a 2008 NC State decommit decommits from his high school as well (a pattern?), a USC transfer transfers out of his next destination (oh my!), and a few more mid-majors have some updates as well.
  • What impact will Donovan's decision to bolt out for the Orlando Tragic have on his current recruiting class as well as future recruits at Florida? Only time will tell... Perhaps that may partially explain why Patrick Patterson did not select Florida.
  • Thanks to John Clay's blog for adding this blog to their blogroll! A native Kentuckian, John Clay has been covering sports for the Lexington Herald-Leader for over 20 years.
