Weekend update

Lots of updates at the Hodge Report. New players are joining Vandy, Drake, Winthrop, San Diego, Marhsall (former Clemson player), South Carolina St, and a few more mid-major programs. Visit the Hodge Report for all the details. One player had been denied admission at San Francisco, which means he can either try another college, go to prep school or to JuCo.

They also have an update on SoCal Leonard Washington who recently created a stir on the AAU circuit. He was supposed to go to USC this year but will reclassify. Now he is transferring to a SoCal high school. He is a top 100 player in the class of 2008, but his stock is rising.

The earlier the better!

Dick Hoops Weiss is a great resource for summer recruiting information! His latest post informs us about upcoming events, and spotlights a number of east coast prospects. He also informs us that Lance Stephenson (the next big thing?) will skip AAU ball, stay in the N-Y-C, workout with Tiny Morton and streetball. Readers not familiar with the NYC scene, may remember seeing the Rucker league games on national TV. But wait, there's more from Dick Hoops Weiss!

Another great resource for recruiting is John Clay's Sidelines blog. Today he talks about Tyreke Evans, one of the most touted players of 2008. According to a Philly paper (Evans plays in that area) his top two teams are Villanova (local team) and PitinoVille (Louisville). The other three in the running: The Calipari Experiment, the Calhoun Empire, and Texas. Out of the running: Ole Roy, Billy the Repeat Diva, and Ga Tech.

The Hodge Report of CSTV informs us that another player is coming to college early, this time Malcolm White at Ole Miss. White was scheduled to arrive in 2008-2009, but managed to qualify already, so he will be joining the Rebels in 2007-2008. A nice boost for Andy Kennedy's squad. Jeff Goodman had a short write-up on this yesterday as well.

Speaking of the brawl, DeCourcy has a profile on Leonard Washington. Once a USC commit, Leonard is now a member of the 2008 class and is currently considering Arizona, ASU, Kentucky, Ole Miss and USC. DeCourcy describes him as "thickly muscled 6-6 power forward" which would earn him points among physical defense coaches.

If you have been following recruiting, you will recall that Billy Gillispie has been picking up commitments left and right. A Sea of Blue and WildCats Thunder tally them up for the rest of us. As you may recall from his early days at Texas A&M, Gillispie was not shy about picking up as many commits as possible, and sorting out the 13 scholarships later on.

What to do during the season in-between the seasons? Read college basketball books! Dane Bradshaw's book is already out and Wes Miller's new book on North Carolina is coming out by September.

New players will go to MartelliVille and Colorado

New players will find their way eventually to Saint Joseph of Philadelphia and Colorado according to the latest updates from CSTV's Hodge Repor(t). They also remind us that Ohio State has picked up a juco guard for the upcoming season. He's probably no Mike Conley but Thad Matta has done well with JuCos at Ohio State before he was able to pick up the high-profile five-star recruits. So don't cry for the Buckeyes.

Signing Ed Davis was certainly a good thing for North Carolina, after Ole Roy went 0 from 3 among other 2008 big men. But he will probably need to get more players in 2008. He has a point guard lined up in Larry Drew (California pipeline continues). If the name sounds familiar on both sides of the Atlantic, his dad played in both the NBA and the European leagues. Another wing or two wouldn't hurt given their style of play.

Ouch for the 2008 Class!

Jeff Goodman of Fox Sports critiques the 2008 class. He doesn't go as far as Mike De Courcy did a few days ago, but he does call Greg Monroe "Josh McRoberts with a better attitude". Ouch! Goodman also picks his top player in the class.

Goodman also spots one more problem for Dave Odom. Yet another one of his recruits was not admitted to the university

Rucker will be rocking according to Dick Hoops Weiss. The Boost Mobile Elite 24 camp will feature some of the top players of the 2008 class, and beyond, including Lance Stephenson and freshman LaQuinton Ross.

Nick's 2 Cents blogs about Syracuse, Boeheim and Hopkins and Fine getting 2010 recruit Dion Waiters. Dion is one of at least 13 players from the 2010 class to commit to a college. 2010 class players are eligible to play college ball in 2010-2011.

Gary Parrish of CBS Sportsline writes about Prep schools, the NCAA and learning disabilities

Mike DeCourcy makes a strong case for showing the FIBA Under 19 basketball games on TV. The games are available online via FIBA. The Play the Right Way blog is also following the U19 games.

The NCAA Tournament post with all (but one) the 2007 NCAA Tournament DVDs has been re-organized for easier access. Now the games are broken by region, and each game is clearly identified as Elite 8, Sweet 16, 2nd Round and 1st Round. The only games missing are (ironically) the Final Four games and the opening round game. The other 60 games are available, and cost between $22-$25 per game. 2007 NCAA Tournament games on DVD. Thad Matta goes JuCo!

No, he does not leave Ohio State to coach at a JuCo, but he picks up a JuCo guard for 2007-2008 according to the Hodge Report at CSTV. Do not expect this guard to be as good as Mike Conley... Illinois State and Appalachian Trail State added new players as well.

Go West!

The latest Hodge Report of CSTV has three going to Western Michigan and one going to Western Kentucky. Also going west is a california top 100 player changing his mind from Miami of Florida to Washington of Washington (great news for Lorenzo Romar). And an Arizona prospects commits west, and north, to Montana State.

A side-effect of the increase of the 3-point distance? Rotnei Clarke, a player Gary Parrish calls "little white shooter" has been climbing up the charts in the class of 2008. He already committed to Oral Roberts, but an ... oral commitment is not binding (sorry, but I can't resist silly puns). Rotnei says he is going to let G*d make the choice for him...

Goodman informs us that the Morris twins won't reopen their recruiting after looking the Tiger in the eye. As discussed before, they will spend a year in prep school before joining the team/college in 2008-2009. And they keep getting taller. Jeff Goodman's blog at Fox Sports informs us that Ole Roy finally managed to get a high profile forward in the class of 2008. The player is Ed Davis. Check the link for the other three big men Ole Roy missed

Andrew Skwara of Rivals via Yahoo Sports (say that ten times fast) talks about the new age of recruiting: very very early commitments from 14 year olds and such. To quote Tom Konchalski at that age, they don't even know what they want for lunch (then again, who does?). Skwara says that the coaches are split on this issue. Skwara has kindly assembled a list of the 2010 commitments, a lucky 13 of them, with Ohio State and Kentucky getting two each. Others in the game: Baylor, Washington State, USC, West Virgina, NC State, Iowa State, Syracuse and Illinois. A wide array of coaches accepting these commitments, which really shows that if they think they have a chance at a superstar, they'll take them whenever they are willing to commit.

Everything is big in Texas

Everything is big in Texas, including this seven footer Bo Ryan has managed to steal out of Texas/San Antonio, according to CSTV's Hodge Report. More from the repor(t): The Gonzaga Magic has not worn off as they manage to get a player out of the state of Iowa beating the two local schools and Bo Ryan. Others gaining new players: TCU (2), and Santa Clara with new coach Kerry Keating (former UCLA assisstant... On the side of the ledger, one 2008 recruit decommits from the Steve Alford Experience in the Dessert.

Tre'Von Willis finds a new home (thank you CSTV, thank you!)

Midnight Madness is Friday October 12, 2007

Hodge Report reports that SoCal scoring machines and Memphis Tigers bench player Tre'Von Willis will transfer to Kruger State (aka UNLV). Playing time should be available for him at UNLV. Willis was already behind Kemp and Allen at Memphis, and that was before Derrick Rose came along. Needless to say Tre'Von would have probably had to redshirt because there would be no PT in the Memphis backcourt.

Other Hodge Report updates will delight TCU, Denver and UCSB fans as they all get new players. Also a handful of D1 players downgrade or go the JuCo route, the most high profile being a Purdue forward. (By downgrade I mean go to a low-major, or NAIA or Division II or III ).

Gary Parrish had his fill of peaches at the Peach Jam in Georgia. This is his report. Chris Fouch was the hero of the games, while his AAU coach is rumored to be heading to Xavier, right after AAU summer play ends. Parrish also bets an autographed picture of Ashley Judd (???), has a story on Kenny Payne, infighting among the NY Gauchos, and a short profile on 2009 up-and-comer DeShonte Riley, a 6'9" center recruited by Izzo, Matta, Amaker (ooops Beilein), Huggins (ooops Martin) and JT III.

Dick Hoops Weiss writes up on Ernie Kent stealing two top 100 midwestern recruits from Chicago. (Hello Illinois and DePaul?) Weiss also gives us a local perspective on Mr Jersey landing space-eater Christian Morris. Weiss thinks he increases Rutgers chances with local super prospect Olu Ashaolu, a prospect Clark Francis of Hoop Scoop has been talking about for decades (it seems).

Mike DeCourcy evaluates the summer circuit changes, and spotlights class of 2011 (yes 2011) forward Alex Orlakhi. Apparently tattoes were an issue, as Butch Pierre pointed out that there were no visible tattooes. This seems like a "cure the symptoms" type of thing, but what do I know? :)

New news from the Hodge Report at CSTV: Ernie Kent continues to take advantage of his mid-western connections as he lands two top 100 players from Illinois. UTEP and Rutgers get big men, Texas Arlington and Ohio get JuCos, infact Ohio gets three of them! On the other side of the ledger, Andre Clark who did not qualify will go to prep school, and JuCo Euro of Texas A&M and then Kansas State decided to go pro in Europe instead of college hoops.

Sooner than later (new commits)

The CSTV Hodge Report reports that the Sooners got a player ...sooner than later: He has yet to qualify.

Rutgers got a space-eater, and Goodman thinks he is the biggest Fred Hill signee yet. He also notes the toughness of the New York Gauchos guards, two of whom (Darryl Bryant and Chris Fouch) are unsigned. The other two? Jordon Theodore going to Seton Hall and Kemba Walker going to UConn

John Clay writes that the basketball triangle is back!. He is not talking about Philip's triangle offense, but the triangle of Indiana, Kentucky and Louisville.

Ole Roy ain't that good?

In the "what have you done for me lately" world of sports, Ole Roy is in trouble. Part of it maybe a spillover from the meltdown against Georgetown in the Elite 8, part of it is because he signed no one in 2007, and part of it is because he hasn't signed many and lost a handful of high profile verbals for 2008. So, the sky is falling... Or is it?

I'm sure Ole Roy knew that at least one of his prized freshmen would have bolted out. I mean, you didn't need to be a rocket scientist or Marty Blake to figure out that Branda Wright was a top 10 lottery pick. He also had one scholarship to give from graduating senior (Rayshawn Terry). Wes Miller was not on a scholarship in 2006-2007. But in typical Ole Roy fashion, he earmarked just a few players and that was it. Kevin Love went to UCLA (good personality match with Ben Howland, Kevin Love actually enjoys playing in slugfests). So that was it for 2007 for Ole Roy. He's done this at Kansas as well, and that frustrated Jayhawks fans even when they were madly in love with Ole Roy.

Bob Gibbons is quoted in the story below saying: "Blue heaven is a bit cloudy in recruiting". Superscout Dave Telep says "it creates a sense of urgency". Let's not forget the last time Ole Roy had an atypical roster talent-wise he did one of the best coaching jobs of his career.

So what happened? Has the Georgetown meltdown exposed Ole Roy to potential recruits? Or is this just cyclical stuff, accenuated (I was told to use this word, I don't know what it means or how to spell it) by Ole Roy's practice of only selecting a handful of players to recruit and that's it?

I think it's more the latter than the former, but reasonable minds can differ. But I'm not the one drunk or high ;-)

So where did Al-Farouq Aminu commit to? Was it Georgia Tech where his older brother plays? Was it North Carolina having the breakfast of champions? Or was it perhaps where he was needed the most, at Wake Forest?

According to the latest post at the Hodge Report of CSTV he (along with center Tony Woods) have committed to Wake Forest. Yes, Wake Forest!

From Goodman's blog, Al Farouq Aminu, one of the nation’s top players, told FOXSports.com that he intends to make his college decision Thursday between Wake Forest, Georgia Tech and North Carolina. Ga Tech has his older brother, Wake would be more lowkey, and Carolina is, well, Carolana.

Should I stay or should I go? Seven footer John Riek may be transferring to Winchendon according to Goodman's blog. He has reclassified for the class of 2009 and he is becoming one of the hottest names in recruiting circles. He is actually 7'2" but everyone over 7 feet is a seven footer :)

A Sea of Blue blogs about the interview of 2009 GJ Villarino, one of the first 300 verbals to Billy Gillispie. As you may recall, Gillispie went all out getting new players at Texas A&M, including players walking on that could have had scholarships at other schools. Being able to recruit from a much bigger stage than A&M should allow Gillispie to pick up even more players.

The latest Hodge Report update on CSTV has a recap of some of the recent transfers. Find out the new destinations for Reginald Delk, 7-footer Jason Bennett, Wisconsin's DeAaron Williams, Rutgers's Ollie Bailey and more...

Jason Bennett's move just made him one of the most coveted JuCos of the 2008-2009 season. He will have two years remaining, and perhaps the JuCo route would be a clean(er) way for him to follow Huggie-bear to West Virginia. Bennett played high school in Florida (Arlington County Day) so one could assume that the Florida schools may have an advantage. Also look at where his high school teammates are now in college, that may be another possible direction. Or perhaps Marshall, since Donnie Jones managed to pick up three high profile D1 transfers in just a matter of weeks on the job. Donnie Jones probably did the best job in assembling a cast of transfers since Reggie Theus took over New Mexico State, a couple of Sacramento Kings seasons ago :)

Can't stop the Majerus Train!

The only new coach that can probably compete with Kentucky's Billy Gillispie in recruiting impact at his new school is none other than Rick Majerus at Saint Louis. According to CSTV's Hodge Report, Majerus got his fifth commitment, this time from the state of Oregon.

First he points out that Greg Monroe isn't too worried about his rankings (he is now considered the #1 of the 2008 class), then he notes that the line for the services of Al Faroud Aminu is getting longer as he continues to develop, and finally he takes a ... Baseball fans: Free MLB EXtra Innings July 12 thru 18

I just saw this and thought it might be of interest to baseball fans reading this blog. MLB Extra Innings will be having a free preview from July 12 through July 18. On Comcast for sure, I do not know about the other cable or satellite providers. MLB Extra Innings is a pay-per view package showing out of market baseball games, similar to ESPN Full Court for college basketball, ESPN Game Plan for college football and NBA League Pass for the NBA. Oh the NFL and NHL and MLS have something similar as well.

Jeff Goodman takes free recruiting posts to the next level by posting the top 40 of the class of 2009 along with their summer AAU team and a long list of colleges interested in the players and vice-versa. Goodman also provides a schedule of the summer tourneys the players are participating in. A number of websites are now making those available via webcasts so you can be a step ahead of the game without even leaving the comforts of your chair. Great job by Goodman!

Not to be outdone paperback writer Seth Davis (look it up if you don't believe me!) takes a look at the summer AAU recruiting circuit as well. Seth Davis, the host of CSTV's Generation Next, highlights 15 players to watch this summer.

The Hodge Report reports that Miami of Florida is picking up a top 100 player in the 2008 out of the state of California.

The Sidelines Report looks at some of the top prospects for Kentucky in the class of 2009

If you lost track on how many transfers has Donnie Jones managed to pick up in his few hours at Marshall you are not alone. But Goodman keeps track of them. It's three now, including recent Floridian transfer Brandon Powell (along with P-Mac and Spann of Georgetown). Two Final Four transfers on their roster, not bad for Marshall!

Not just the 4th of July holiday, but UCLA is also celebrating the commitment of SoCal prestar J'Rue Holiday to Ben Howland and the UCLA Bruins. His older (but less touted brother) had already committed to the Washington Huskies a few months ago.

Ben Howland seems to be finally able to get more of the better SoCal prep players. Did he promise them to play more uptempo and be less of a total paranoid control freak? Because anyone who has seen UCLA play frequently will attest to both. I know UCLA fans may not like this paragraph, but the tape tells the story!

According to the latest update on the Hodge Report at CSTV Donnie Jones, the new head coach at Marshall has picked up another high profile transfer, this time a forward from a Final Four team. Read the report to find out who (a little mystery and suspense is fun!). As you may recall a couple of days ago Marshall picked up one of the Zags, P-Mac, aka Pierre Marie Altidor Cespedes.

Goodman's blog talks about Billy Gillispie recruiting. Huggie-bear also picks up a youngster. but he is no longer a Bearcat, so shouldn't it be Huggie-Mountaineer?

For some reason the FoxSports website is censoring the word "sophomores" to "sopBLEEPres". Is sophomores a bad word now? :)
